Mentor Program
At BLG, we offer students and associates the opportunity to learn from leading and experienced professionals. We know first hand that development and understanding is accelerated in a culture that supports mentoring, feedback, collaboration and challenge. We work with students to identify and take advantage of individual strengths and interests, and we encourage all BLG professionals to take an active interest in the development of their colleagues and peers.
Whether you are a summer or articling student at BLG, several members of the firm will become formally responsible for your progress. We also practice an open door policy and encourage students to ask questions and seek guidance from all lawyers in the firm.
As a summer student you will be assigned to a mentor or mentors. The mentors’ responsibilities include:
- ensuring you receive a broad spectrum of work and practical experience
- ensuring you have an appropriate workload, both in terms of quality and quantity
- guiding you during your time at BLG
As an articling student, a partner will be designated as your Principal or Maître de Stage. Your Principal or Maître de Stage monitors your progress throughout the year. Most importantly, your Principal or Maître de Stage is an experienced practitioner who provides direct tutoring and individual guidance concerning a variety of professional matters.
New associates have the opportunity to personally select mentors. In the first year, mentors work directly with associates to establish a solid working relationship and to provide hands on coaching and training. However, we believe that an associate's development is hastened by exposure to a range of work experiences and supervising lawyers each with different working styles and business approaches. As such, part of the mentor's role is to also find work opportunities for the associate that offer a diverse range of experience.
